Scour the city : Chinatown Adventure

The great city of San Francisco has so much to offer.  When I take a trip to a part of the city that I rarely visit, it feels like I'm on vacation.  So I decided to hop a bus down to Chinatown to see if anything sparked my imagination as far as weddings are concerned.  This was probably one of the best ideas I've ever had and I had a great time all by my lonesome snapping photos and eating dim sum.

There were lanterns everywhere of course.  Almost every store I went in to had the ceiling completely covered.  But they are so cheap and can easily transform an outdoor space.  The paper lanterns above were marked $2.99 each.  The fabric ones range in size from 3" to 12" and even 36".  They range from $2 - $79.

I Thought these fans would make a great favor for summertime weddings.  They were a steal at $1 each and come in tons of colors.

I was surprised at how cheap these parasols were.  Only $5 for the larger ones and you wouldn't need that many to hang over, say...a dance floor?

I saw tiny 6 packs of these cocktail parasols all over the place for $1.50 each and then BAM! a pack of 144 for $5!  These would look awesome in some mint juleps or lemonade.

So... Chinatown is kinda weird, in that all the stores have pretty much the same thing (lanterns, parasols, coin purses, etc.)  and then you stumble on a box of hundreds of doilies for $1 each.  This was downstairs on the floor way in the back of some store.  A few feet away I found matching 54" tablecloths for $10 each.  If you have visions of a vintage wedding, then you just hit the freakin' jackpot my friend.

True, you don't have to go to Chinatown to get sparklers and noisemakers, but for some reason it looks like they ordered theirs from 1955.  How about sparklers instead of bird seed during your exit from the church.  Ignore the stink bombs.

There were tons of straws everywhere.  I can't quite figure out why, but the colors were perfect and, you guessed it...cheap!  This is a great alternative to paper straws which are excruciatingly adorable, but can you really afford 300 of them?

Another thing about Chinatown, everything is on sale....all the time.  There are tons of shops with a multitude of plates, bowls and cups each marked with their original price and a sale price.  These bowls were $3 each and cups were $2.  I know that may be a little pricey if you need to feed 100+ people, and what are you going to do with 100 orange bowls after your wedding?  But they are great for candy dishes or if you need a splash of color at the self serve drink or desert table.

And finally, my new parasol mobile.  I bought it because it was too pretty to pass up and at $5...c'mon.  I could see a few of them hanging from trees along with some white lanterns.

My Chinatown adventure was totally worth it.  I got so many great ideas and would strongly suggest you play tourist in your own city.  You never know what you'll find.

Vintage Rentals

via Bash please
I really hope this idea isn't old hat before I get married because I loooove it.  It seems like a rather new concept though.  I could only find two vintage rental companies in San Francisco and they both seem to have opened fairly recently.  Both have yet to offer a large selection on china.

Milk Glass rentals is based in San Francisco and has an impressive, but slightly limited inventory in that you won't be able to rent 150 mismatched vintage chairs.  However they do have some awesome large pieces and tons of incidentals like vintage tins, cake platters, bird cages...etc.

It's the same deal with One True Love Vintage.  A few large pieces and a lot of small trinkets and embellishments.  You will still have to search elsewhere for your china and the majority of your seating.

Leave it to this Austin based company to have it locked down.  Loot vintage rentals doesn't have a full working website yet but they've got a pretty impressive inventory of china and are constantly adding to their furniture collection.  It looks like they might be adding some vintage church pews to boot.  Check out their Blog.

Let me do you a favor...

 via 100 layer cake
Or better yet, do it yourself!  The wedding favor is your chance to give your guests a little something to show your appreciation for the fact that they traveled a great distance to watch you and the love of your life make puppy dog eyes at each other all day.  There are so many different ways to say "Thank You," edibles, flowers, trinkets, toys and the ever popular...seeds and bulbs.  You know your Aunt Gladys loves this one.  Every wedding attended means a new tulip border or herb garden.

Here are some of my favorite DIY favors.  The possibilities are endless.  Click the picture for a tutorial or where to buy.

Stick 'em in a cupcake
Love the packaging

would also be adorable in a variety of vessels...tiny teacups perhaps

The Tutorial calls for Dahlia bulbs, but you could stuff these with anything

Cake Toppers

Although not a vital detail, cake toppers are sometimes overlooked as a chance to be creative and unique.  There is nothing worse than those "Off the shelf" toppers from cake shops and our friends in the etsy world have provided us with some great alternatives.  My favorite (shown above) is from Ready Go Paper Studio.  These paper toppers are customizable based on hair type and color, skin color and outfits.  Totally Boss!!

I've selected a few of my favorite etsy finds below.  Click the picture to visit the shop.

Color Drop!

If ever I'm stuck and can't find a jumping off point for a color palette, I just look around me and try to find something that inspires me.  All wedding designs try to evoke a certain feeling or convey an idea, right?  So just decide what it is...romantic, sunny, sweet, fun, shipwrecked etc. and look for your inspiration in the things that conjure said feeling.

We're talkin' color, people!!

It seems the days of 2-tone weddings are finally gone.  Although I must admit that when I was 13 I may have muttered the words, "My wedding is going to be Burgundy and baby blue..."  But the most interesting weddings have a variety of colors with inspiration coming from the season, jewel-tones, candy shops, comic books, old movies...You name it.  The pantone color palette is your oyster!  I must offer a word of warning though, there is no such thing as too much color, but you can definitely have too many strong colors.  The best results usually come from two or three main colors and afew lighter shades to sing back-up.
